🦇 Bats Aren’t Bad Guys! 🦇

California is home to 26 bat species, many of which are threatened or endangered due to habitat loss and white-nose syndrome. These incredible animals play a vital role in our ecosystem, with a single bat capable of eating thousands of insects each night. While bats are important to our environment, they can also carry the rabies virus.

This week, Fresno Chaffee Zoo staff discovered two deceased bats on Zoo grounds. Following established Zoo protocols, both bats were submitted for rabies testing, and results confirmed they were positive for rabies.

The health and safety of our guests, staff, volunteers, and animals remains our highest priority. The Zoo maintains comprehensive safety protocols to help ensure the continued safety of everyone at the Zoo.

The discovery serves as an important reminder that rabies is endemic to the Fresno area and that you should never approach, touch, or handle bats or other wild animals. If you encounter wildlife that appears sick, injured, or is behaving unusually, keep a safe distance and contact your local wildlife authorities.
Enrichment helps keep our animals engaged and sharp, and sometimes it even takes special forms during different seasons. Wallace got to enjoy a little splash pad to cool off his shell. 🐢 💓
