Join Fresno Chaffee Zoo in celebrating Asali and Taraj, the Zoo’s 2-year-old African lions, as they get ready to embark on an exciting new journey.
Meet The Siblings
Asali and Taraj were born at Fresno Chaffee Zoo on November 5th, 2024 to first-time mom, Zamaya, and dad, Chisulo. Immediately, the pair became a favorite for both guests and staff alike for their curious and playful personalities. Asali was named after the word “honey” in Swahili by her Zoological Care staff, a reference to her golden-toned fur, while Taraj’s name was voted on by the community and means “hope and faith” in Swahili. They met the public on their first habitat debut on March 3rd, 2025 and in the time since, we have all loved watching them bond, play, and grow into adolescent lions.

Why Are They Moving?
Asali and Taraj are moving to another Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited institution as part of the African Lion Species Survival Plan (SSP). This move mimics natural changes in lion pride social dynamics as juvenile males typically leave their pride, forming groups until they are old enough for a pride of their own. Asali will be moving with Taraj as a companion while they both continue to grow and develop.

Wish Them Well
Guests can come visit Asali and Taraj in African Adventure to wish them well before they leave for their new home! The last day to see them will be October 21st. Stop by to celebrate the siblings, learn more about African lions, and say farewell.
